In its gothic design and historical relevance in the area, Arundel sits on the Pee Dee River as a solemn reminder of its history. As home to several slaves, and being a leading rice producing area, the site stands as one of the last slave houses of the Arundel Plantation.
Plantations
Arcadia Plantation Cemetery
Home to a total of three families, Arcadia served as the area’s leading rice producer and biggest rice plantation. Today it is deemed a historical site and can be visited to see the massive and beautiful architecture.
Friendfield Plantation
In being one of the wealthiest plantations in rice, and housing over 200 slaves, Friendfield Plantation has had its history and lineage stored throughout. Today visitors can feel the eerie remembrance of the lives shared there. Take it in as well as learn the lives of others, including Michelle Obama’s great-great-grandfather if you pass by the Sampit River.
