GEORGETOWN COUNTY
Georgetown County was the center of the Rice Kingdom, producing some of the most famous varietal grains, such as Carolina Gold Rice. Georgetown City also served as a social, religious, and political center for the region, organizing conferences, electing the last black congressman to the state legislature, and providing a conduit to higher education through its strong, but underfunded, systems of schools. Stop by the Plantersville Cultural Center to visit the many villages that still exist, visit Brookgreen Gardens where you can listen to the voices of Gullah Geechee communities amongst indigenous flora and fauna, and then stop in the city to feast on traditional foods and visit the multiple museums exploring this culture.
