Why this Project

The Gullah Geechee Pee Dee digital project (GGDP) aims to teach people about Gullah Geechee traditions and places in Horry and Georgetown counties (the PeeDee). This project is produced by The Athenaeum Press and The Joyner Institute at Coastal Carolina University. The Athenaeum Press is a student-driven publishing lab, and The Joyner Institute for Gullah and African Diaspora Studies is the only interdisciplinary institute dedicated to a critical understanding of the experiences of Gullah Geechee people and other descendants within the global African diaspora. Both these initiatives work with students, community members, and faculty to craft multimedia projects that showcase the beautiful diversity of the Carolinas.
This project adds stories to the cultural landscape that help visitors and residents alike learn about this region’s Gullah Geechee past and present. The project team started with the Cultural Resources identified in the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor and the Green Book of South Carolina. Featuring these stories can help preserve the lessons of the past and build a more sustainable future. By adding these stories in the PeeDee, this project reimagines this region as a new place and cultural landscape for others to learn and visit.
